Green Beans and Cabbage and Peas, OH MY!

Well, it is summer on the farm, and for the first time I get to be a part of harvesting the garden and "putting up" all of the produce! This is a HUGE job... the Reitz's have a family garden that is over an acre, and they plant all kinds of stuff. It really takes a group effort to pick, wash, and prepare all of the food! We started with peas last week (to y'all Southerners, that would be "sweet peas"-- although we really don't discriminate up here because no one has black eyed peas, purple hulled peas, etc. so we don't get confused), then spent a day making sauerkraut out of about a billion heads of cabbage (okay, not a billion heads, but an extended truck-bed full of them, and we got over FORTY GALLONS of sauerkraut) and now we are working on green beans. Earlier this week we picked and froze over 60 quarts, and as I write this I am getting ready to head back to the garden for more! There is really nothing that compares to the taste of fresh veggies; I am getting so spoiled I may never eat another frozen pea or green bean again! Here are a few pictures of the garden and surrounding farm land. I still cannot get over how beautiful the mountains and valleys are around here!

A view of the farm from the garden:

Some of the Reitz's hard at work in the garden (the little blondie is my nephew, Oliver--he and his family, Lloyd's brother Nick, Niki, Oliver, and little sister Karen) have recently returned home after 2 years in China):
